Marley Washenitz and the Fairmont Senior girls’ basketball team capped off their impressive season with a championship Saturday afternoon, winning 51-39 over Wyoming East for the program’s third-ever title, and second in the last three years.
Washenitz scored a team-high 18 points to cap off an impressive run through the tournament in her first trip to Charleston.
The freshman was one of three Polar Bears named to the All-Tournament team.
Fairmont Senior trailed by as many as 14 points in the first quarter, but outscored the Warriors 22-10 in the second quarter to take a 29-27 lead into halftime.
The Polar Bears limited Wyoming East to just 12 points in the second half, and to just 23-percent shooting for the game from the floor, while Corey Hines’ defense also forced 19 turnovers.
Anysa Jordan (15) and Abby Faulkner (10) chipped in double-digit scoring performances as well.
But Washenitz stole the show in Class AA in the the state’s capitol this week, putting the rest of the classification on notice given that she’s just a freshmen.
This title is now paired with the 1997 and 2017 titles, and also will fit nicely beside the trophy that the Polar Bear football brought back to Fairmont Senior High School in November, and the wrestling trophy won again by Zach Frazier on the mats earlier this year.
The Fairmont Senior boys’ hoops team will look to keep the impressive streak going next week in Charleston.
