Fairmont Senior’s defense was stellar in a 35-6 semifinal win over Mingo Central. Can they do it again against Bluefield?
The beavers are a perfect 13-0 this season, joining Martinsburg as the state’s last remaining undefeated teams. Bluefield has dominated many of its opponents thanks to a potent ground game, led by senior tailback Mookie Collier.
Last week, he racked up 300 yards in a 37-14 semifinal win over Bridgeport. Collier is considered a front-runner for the Kennedy Award, and in order for the Polar Bears to win Friday, they’ll have to find a way to stop him, as well as fullback Truck Edwards.
“From what we’ve seen on film, and taking the first 13 games into account, I’d have to say yes, he’s probably the best overall athlete we’re going to face,” said Polar Bears head coach Nick Bartic.
Fairmont Senior allowed 175 rushing yards to Mingo Central last week, but managed to shut out the Miners in the second half.
