Cancer survivors, family, friends, and caregivers gathered at the Bridgeport Conference Center for The 19th annual Celebration of Life. The event hosted by the WVU Medicine United Hospital Center is held in honor of the battle that survivors face after diagnosed.

“Survivor is someone who has taken on cancer with full force and has moved forward towards a journey towards that survivorship,” said Linda Carte, vice president of cancer services and post care at UHC.

At the dinner, United Hospital Center awarded one caregiver the Guardian Angel Award,  invited Keith Matheny to inspire and entertain guests.

“By putting people in the room that have this common focus of survivorship, it really does bring a sense of hope,” said Carte.

For survivors who have attended this and pat events, sharing experience and stories build a community atmosphere.

“Being a survivor is waking up every day, seeing the sun. Once you been diagnosed you sort of feel as though its all over with, well its not.I enjoy hearing their stories and I’m sure they enjoy hearing ours to just know that we’ve all been through the same thing,” said Bernadine Beeson, a cancer survivor and employee at UHC.

From survivors to caregivers, many people in the room benefited from the messages delivered.

“There are people in this room that could have been diagnosed last  and there are people in the room today that could have been diagnosed thirty years ago. They can be a role model for other cancer survivors going forward,” said Carte.
