Twenty-one monuments were recently vandalized at the Machpelah Cemetery in Lewis County. The board estimated that vandals did nearly $10,000 worth of damage to the gravestones.
Many were pushed over and cracked and need to be replaced. Some graves that were damaged date all the way back to 1888. Members of the Machpelah cemetery board say this is the most damage they have seen at the cemetery in 29 years.
“You have vandalism from time to time, but nothing like this. I don’t understand how people can get their kicks out of destroying in a cemetery,” said Shirley Burkhart, Secretary Treasurer of the Machpelah Cemetery Board.
The board is offering a $1,000 reward for the conviction of the vandals. If you have any information on this crime, you can contact the Weston Chief of Police, Josh Thomas at 304-269-3207. You can also contact the city at 304-269-6141.
